Calidrino

Calidrino is a small anomalous dictionary of neologisms created to describe things that exist, but that don’t have a name and things that have a name, but don’t exist. As in a normal dictionary, each entry is defined in the its fundamental meaning, accompanied by a brief etymological explanation and followed from a graphic illustration.

Calidrino was born as a mockery of canonical dictionaries, which in courtly and complex language manage to confuse the ideas of people, so why not? Finally a dictionary that, with the same language is capable of entertaining.

This is the reason for a game, with few rules and great fun. The game is all about the contrast between an old-fashioned, manualistic structure that may seem boring and contents totally opposite to the serious structure.

The same is proposed in the project, with soft colors and modern font, with encyclopedias like illustration. The goal is the same as Calidrino and it is to entertain and teach some new words.

Telefroidata

long phone call at the end of which we find ourselves dedicated to an unexpected psychoanalytic session

Dicactonautica

science that deals with crossing the sea between saying and doing

Impiccione

someone who disguises himself as a pigeon to spy on someone or something and/or find information on activities not pertaining to him

Minimentale

mentally pocketable

Cefalomma

rear figure of a human head partially concealing an optically perceived scene

Rapacefalo

literally turnip head

Calidrino: a dictionary of wonder

Have you ever felt lost in the labyrinthine prose of traditional dictionaries, where complex language obscures meaning rather than illuminating it? Calidrino offers a refreshing antidote: a dictionary that embraces the very style it playfully subverts. Born from a simple yet provocative question – if canonical dictionaries use elaborate language to often confuse, why not use the same style to entertain? – Calidrino is a unique linguistic game, reveling in the delightful tension between its classic structure and its thoroughly modern, often absurd, content.

Calidrino isn’t your typical dusty tome. It’s a vibrant exploration of language, a playful dance between tradition and innovation. Imagine the familiar comfort of an old-fashioned dictionary, its manualistic feel almost nostalgic. This seemingly dry format, with its structured entries and meticulous definitions, becomes the perfect canvas for Calidrino’s whimsical exploration of words. It’s a familiar framework, inviting you in before surprising you with its unexpected twists and turns.

This playful contrast is mirrored in Calidrino’s design. Soft, inviting colors and a contemporary font create a visually appealing and accessible experience, a gentle nudge away from the often intimidating aesthetic of academic texts. The illustrations, reminiscent of classic encyclopedias, add another layer of charm and visual interest, grounding the fantastical neologisms in a familiar visual language. This careful balance of old and new, serious and silly, is key to Calidrino’s unique appeal. It’s a dictionary that doesn’t take itself too seriously, yet subtly enriches your vocabulary and understanding of language.

But what truly sets Calidrino apart is its content. It’s not just a collection of existing words; it’s a treasure trove of neologisms, words coined to fill the gaps in our language. Some words describe things that exist but lack a name, capturing those fleeting concepts that dance on the tip of our tongues. Others, perhaps even more intriguing, are words created for things that have a name but don’t actually exist, giving voice to our imaginations and the whimsical worlds we conjure within them.

Each entry in Calidrino is treated with the same meticulous care as in a traditional dictionary. The fundamental meaning of the word is clearly defined, providing a solid foundation for understanding. But Calidrino goes further, delving into the etymology of each neologism, tracing its linguistic roots and adding a touch of scholarly credibility to the playful nature of the project. This etymological exploration adds depth and context, making the learning experience both entertaining and enriching.

And finally, to complete the sensory experience, each entry is accompanied by a graphic illustration. These visuals bring the words to life, creating a memorable connection between the written word and its visual representation. The illustrations not only enhance understanding but also spark the imagination, inviting you to explore the world through the lens of these newly discovered words.

Calidrino is more than just a dictionary; it’s an invitation. An invitation to play with language, to expand your vocabulary, and to discover the delightful absurdity of words both real and imagined. It’s a celebration of creativity, a testament to the power of language to shape our reality and to unlock the hidden corners of our minds. So, dive into the pages of Calidrino, and let the words transport you to a world of linguistic wonder.
